Harris Scythe Works, founded by John Harris, who used triphammers to forge iron scythes. The trip-hammer sounds were so prominent, the area became known as “Hammertown.”

A roadside field and wooded area.

  • The company produced about 18,000 scythes yearly.
  • John Harris started out as a blacksmith, and learned how to make scythes from a mixed-race slave owned by his uncle.
