In the 1800s, this was a summer home of then Gov. Washington Hunt. The 17th governor of the state of New York.

What is there now

Wyndham Lawn home for children (youth and family services) and Henrietta G. Lewis Campus School for children.

Governor Hunt at that time won his election by only several hundred votes, and was part of the Whig Party. Eventually became a Democrat shortly after the Whig Party dissolved, was defeated for a second term as Governor. Hunt helped establish the Holly Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of fire protection systems. The City of Chicago refused the company’s approach for its prevention system. Shortly thereafter the famous Chicago fire took its toll.
