Bezaleel Atchinson of Connecticut settled near here with is wife, Eleanor Farrington, and 8 children. He built a log home, schoolhouse, and a mill (c. 1810). At the time this area was a part of the Town of Northampton.

The immediate area is rural farmland. To the west is the Atchinson Pioneer Family Cemetery, in which lies the final resting place of Bazaleel, his descendants, as well as other early settlers. As of the 2010 census, Parma is home to over 15,600 residents.
