What was there

The family home of Charles W. Howard, who founded the world famous Santa School, as well as Christmas Park – a reindeer petting zoo, and very small amusement park which closed in the mid 1960s.  Newly trained Santas were able to practice their skills at the park, which, at its peak, attracted 80,000 visitors per year, from around Western New York and the northeastern United States.

What is there now

The home still stands and is a private residence.  Behind the home is what remains of Christmas Park.

    Though my memories are vague, I visited Christmas Park as a very young girl. I do remember feeding the reindeer. They liked Ry-Krisps…..and fingers. What a rush I got when I visited again many decades later and photographed this location for New York Historic! Long live Santa! @<[:-{)

    Who could have imagined, in 1963, that the little girl in the video would grow up to be a very creative quality photographer, and the lady who aborted the ride down the slide never tried again. What a great memory and article.
